Paris Fashion Week always brings surprises and novelties with its parades. But in this edition, the ones who are giving the most talk are not the models, nor the designers. Nor the celebrities who have attended the parades enjoying front row. The firm founded by the Spanish maestro Cristóbal Balenciaga has combined its haute couture with one of the most popular cultural references in the world, the animated series The Simpsons. How? Yes, what you are reading. And it has revolutionized the entire fashion world.
When his fashion show ended, held at the Chatelet Theater in Paris, what nobody imagined was seeing an episode of The Simpsons projected with Balenciaga and fashion as protagonists. It is a full-fledged fashion film, a marketing coup that has achieved its goal: to make people talk about Balenciaga. It has become viral and, of course, one of the favorite moments of the catwalk for fashion lovers and those who are not so much.
Good humor about its prices, irony with French and American clichés, an authentic ode to the power of Anna Wintour and references to the artisanal process of haute couture mark this very special episode. Do not hesitate to see it in full and pay attention to the details (do you recognize Kim Kardashian in the audience?). More than 800,000 views on YouTube (there would be countless on other social networks) demonstrate the success achieved by this audiovisual piece.
The Simpsons and Balenciaga
The story begins when Homer marks the birthday of his wife, Marge, on the calendar on January 1. It's October 2, he has plenty of time. But the days, the weeks, the months pass (beer by beer) much faster than we think. When he realizes that he only has one day to search for the gift, he steals Marge's fashion magazine that he reads while she sleeps. Marked, a page with a Balenciaga design on which she has written “Some day”. He discovers that the origin is French and a series of popular French icons appear in her mind… Her big idea of him? Write to Balenciaga asking for the cheapest piece he has of his brand. When they read it they don't understand that he may actually be asking for even a label. They decide to send her the dress (with the invoice, obviously).
In a show of good humor, they send the package home from The Simpsons in a van with several police motorcycles guarding it (for the price and value of any of its pieces). When Marge opens the box and tries it on she is the happiest woman in the world, but she knows that she must return it. It's one more of her husband's famous blunders, they can't afford a $19,000 dress. She only wants to put it on once... Will this walk be the most dangerous in the world? Being the Simpsons, we know that it is.
While an instrumental version of "La vie en rose" plays, Homer acts as a human barrier against any accident that could spoil the wonderful dress that Marge wears through the streets of Springfield. Marge returns the dress with a note in which she thanks you for fulfilling her dream during those 30 minutes in which she felt a little special. Then the yellow version of Balenciaga's creative designer Demna Gvasalia appears, reading Marge's words with glassy eyes. "It's the saddest thing I've ever heard and I grew up in the Soviet Union," she jokes. And she decides to go look for her in a private jet of the brand.
They take advantage of the flight to pay homage to the creative craft processes of a haute couture brand. Those who make the sketches, those who cut, those who sew, those who assemble the pieces, those who place every detail… Demna Gvasalia sets out to rescue Springfield from being a depressed city. How will she do it? Inviting them to be her models in Paris. Although they had not heard of the fashion capital, knowing that there is a new KFC on the Champs-Élysées encourages them to participate.
We will see all the characters trying on and wearing the designs, already iconic pieces such as the sports-socks. Anna Wintour will sit in the front row to turn the situation around, when the critics begin to say that they don't like her, she says that she does and the audience ends up chanting and applauding. We see on the catwalk some of the most well-known members of the city of Springfield and the entire Simpson family. Marge closes the parade with a majestic gold dress and manages to make even Ana Wintour cry.
The short ends with a cruise where everyone celebrates the parade. Marge asks "when is the next fashion week?", to which they reply "honey, this is Paris, every minute is fashion week".
