Tokyo Week, which begins today, features the collections of 51 designers, 20 of whom will do live shows

03.18.2021.- Today, March 18, the parades of the Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo, which is the main one in Japan, begin in Tokyo. Organized by the Japan Fashion Week Organization (JFWO), it will show collections for fall/winter 2021/2022. Thus, it joins the Fashion Weeks organized in Paris, Milan, London and New York, which are the most important in the world.

Most of the parades are held in two different venues: the Shibuya Hikarie and Omotesando Hills. Some others in different locations in the capital of Japan.

Challenges live and online

The program is denser than in the previous season, in which 35 brands participated. 13 of them showed their collections with physical parades; the rest, only online. Now, in March 2021, the catwalk has 51 designers, 20 of whom will make live presentations.

Both the organizers and the designers and their brands are very cautious in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. Consequently, all live parades will end at 8 p.m. at the latest and will be able to admit only 25% of the total number of spectators from pre-pandemic editions. Kaoru Imajo, director of the JFWO, has commented on this: people are very eager to attend, but they are also very cautious.

The Week's program includes events for professionals and for the general public. Beautiful People and Undercover are two of the most important national brands among those who will parade, but they have not paraded in Tokyo for 4 and 19 years. Both -which are also regularly present at Paris Fashion Week- have joined a program by Rakuten, the main sponsor of the catwalk, which supports Japanese designers who have suffered from the pandemic.

During the Week, the Tokyo National Art Center will exhibit the retrospective exhibition Fashion in Japan 1945-2020. Includes a special collaboration by Yoshikazu Yamagata and Fumito Ganryu, creators of the Writtenafterwards brand.

One of the most anticipated fashion shows among those that will be shown only online is that of Takeshi Osumi for the Mistergentleman brand, a Japanese legend in streetwear. Osumi created his collection in the hospital a few months ago before he passed away in January 2021.
