The Council of Fashion Designers of America hosted, for yet another year, the CFDA Awards gala in New York City; a ceremony where innovation and creativity within the fashion sector are celebrated and which honors both renowned and emerging designers. Notable nominees included first-time debut fashion designers Edvin Thompson and Jerry Lorenzo, designers including Pierpaolo Piccioli, Miuccia Prada and CFDA Award winners Christopher John Rogers, Emily Bode Aujla and Telfar Clemans.

Recipient of the Best Women's Fashion Designer Award, Christopher John Rogers received the Emerging Designer of the Year award the year before. For her part, Bode Aujla, who became the first designer to show her designs at New York Men's Fashion Week in 2017, was awarded the Emerging Designer Award in 2019. Likewise, Telfar Clemans, founder of Telfar and admired worldwide for her iconic "Bushwick Birkin" bag, she received the Accessory Designer of the Year Award.

In addition to the awards dedicated to designers, the Face of the Year Award was held, where Dior's new ambassador, Anya Tayor-Joy was recognized as such, the Fashion Icon Award for Zendaya, the Geoffrey Award Bennet Lifetime Achievement for Dapper Dan and finally, the Media Award for the Editor-in-Chief of Marie Claire –in its American version– Nina Garcia.
