Starting today, the Carmen Campus of the University of Huelva (UHU) has a protected parking lot for bicycles, a provision that was inaugurated this Monday, July 5, and which has been made possible thanks to the agreement signed last year between the University of Huelva and the University of Huelva. Atlantic Copper Foundation, which has contributed a large part of the financing for the start-up of this project.
The action is part of one of the objectives-framework pursued by both entities, that of making the Campus del Carmen "a sustainable and energy-efficient campus", as highlighted by the rector of the UHU, María Antonia Peña, during the inauguration of the parking lots.
"It seemed important to us, within the promotion of the use of public transport, to encourage the use of bicycles as a means of transport to gradually eliminate vehicle traffic on our campus", continued the rector, who would like "this commitment for the bike racks was related to the possibility of building a bike lane in the city that would link the campus with the rest of the city so that all our students could come by bicycle”, he explained.
The car park is made up of two spaces that allow bicycles to be stored "safely and comfortably", continued María Antonia Peña, after which she thanked the Atlantic Copper Foundation for "also helping us with this project".
In the same line, the general director of the Foundation, Antonio de la Vega, has stated, for whom this project is the result of "great work behind by the University of Huelva", because "this type of parking is not very common in Spanish universities” by having “a very protected and very complete system”, he detailed.
Likewise, De la Vega has underlined that this project, in which "we have been collaborating for a long time", is "one more activity within the close, intense and long relationship that we have with the University of Huelva", after what he has indicated which is “a very laudable action to encourage the use of sustainable transport”.
Finally, the vice-rector for Infrastructure, Manuel Maña, explained that this car park provides a solution to the problem of thefts that have occurred on campus, since the modules "protect the car park with restricted access", since "only you can access with a card” that is available to members of the university community, he explained.
Each module has capacity for 32 bicycles, Maña continued, although he announced that the project "will allow us to expand the car park in other parts of the campus", after which he detailed that the investment has been 43,000 euros, "financed almost in entirely by the Atlantic Copper Foundation”, he pointed out.
This project is part of the set of actions carried out by the UHU's Office of the Vice President for Computing, Communications and Infrastructure in order to contribute to environmental sustainability, reducing the carbon footprint caused by university activity.
