Antequera celebrated its local holiday yesterday, in which the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils were very present with concentrations at the gates of the Town Hall and minutes of silence in the Antequera baton contest and in the draw for the bulls at noon like in the rest of the country.
From early in the morning, the area with awnings on Calle de Cantareros was set up, where this year the Antequera baton competitions took place, first; and that of traditional and flamenco costumes, later, inside the downtown fair.
First of all, the participants arrived at the typical dish contest, only with the instruments to make it by hand: the pestle and the dornillo, mallet and special plate to make it. Once seated, they had three hours to make them by hand, the traditional way.
They combined tomatoes, green peppers, bread, garlic, salt and oil, to obtain the delicacy from Antequera. As Francisco Carmona, president of the jury, said, "the secret of a good porra is in the pestle", since "the porra that was made before was exquisite because people amused themselves by mashing for as long as necessary until it was creamy and homogeneous”.
While the minutes passed, with a lot of heat despite the shaded area, a group of participants sang a “feliciano”, a fandango that marked the rhythm of the majas, in an endearing image of the customs of Antequeran gastronomy, which It comes from the field when farmers were looking for an inexpensive and nutritious meal.
Then, the already traditional flamenco and short dress contest was held, as well as the Antequera costume, without the variant presented at the Malaga fair, discussed by part of the population for not respecting the native lines. Among the contestants, many children and young people, with a predominance of women, who paraded down the catwalk to the rhythm of flamenco music. Even mothers with their children, some newborns, which drew the admiration and applause of the public. While waiting for the awards ceremony, music from flamenco groups and rocieros in the same place.
