The Mexican National Team closed its 2021 activity with a friendly match against Chile using the same uniform and crest that it has dress in recent times. This is after a week since the Mexican Football Federation presented the new logo that will renew the image of the national team in all its categories.
The team led by Gerardo Tata Martino took to the field of the Q2 Stadium in the city of Austin, in Texas, United States, with the white uniform and the shield that has been the image of El Tri for more than a decade. Similarly, the coaching staff dressed without any news.
However, the reason for this fact was revealed the same day the new coat of arms was presented. "The image that we will release with this logo is the uniform that we will use in the World Cup in Qatar, we will surely be seeing that uniform by the end of the summer of 2022 meanwhile we will continue to use all the uniforms we have", said Yon de Luisa, president of the FMF.
The change had a mixed reception. While some fans or personalities from the field applauded the renewal, others criticized and called the image infamous. José Ramón Fernández wrote on his social media: “The vast majority of soccer fans didn't like the Tri's new 'modernized' shield at all. Me neither!".
But Yon de Luisa defended the action and explained how the idea of the new shield was configured: “to recognize the past, everything that represents the history of Mexico. It is a logo by the Mexicans for the Mexicans. We brought the previous logo, the part of the colors of the flag, the stone of the Aztec sun, the eagle, and we fused them into a new, more modern image”, he explained.
