Nirvana gets another lawsuit over a smiley face logo, and the band claims it was created by Kurt Cobain.
During the last few months, Nirvana has gone through different legal problems, one of the most prominent being the lawsuit filed by Spencer Elden, the man who, as a baby, starred on the cover of 'Nevermind' and claimed his image as pornography and child exploitation.
Another of the most popular lawsuits is that of the famous smiley face logo, as the designer claims that the design is his and not Kurt Cobain's.
The problem started in 2018 when designer Marc Jacobs launched his 'Bootleg Redux Grunge' fashion line, using the famous smiley face symbol made popular by Nirvana and trademarked by Kurt Cobain in 1993 and later artist Robert Fisher joined the case.
The company that manages the grunge band's copyrights rejected the lawsuit by Fisher, who was artistic director of Geffen Records, and filed the complaint in 2020, also alleging that it was he who created the aforementioned design as he was the band's go-to person for graphic design issues.
The designer expressed that he does not intend to claim an economic reward for the use of the logo, but to be recognized with his authorship.
On the other hand, Nirvana's lawyers reported that the band has full ownership of the design, assuring that Kurt Cobain was the one who created it in 1991 and registered it until 1993, in addition, they added that Fisher had never shown interest in it. logo for 30 years.
Surely Kurt Cobain is squirming from where he stands.
