Jorge Díez, design director of Seat: "The cars that circulate today are already old"

For a few months the SEAT group has a new design director. Jorge Díez replaces Alejandro Mesonero, who left after Luca de Meo's departure. Díez is an old acquaintance of the company and, in fact, participated in the design of the Ateca. He has developed much of his career under the shadow of the mythical designer Walter da Silva in Audi. He has before him the challenge of drawing the new generation of coupra and fitting aesthetics with electrification.

He has been a long season in Audi. Does it mean that the Seat and Cupra tomorrow in terms of design will be a bit like the German brand? How to fight to do things better, break barriers and confront engineers to express the maximum. But designers have to be very flexible. We have to have a very open mind. What you cannot do is move the brands from one side to another. Audi goes in the direction of German luxury. A logical and rational direction, with parallel lines that begin and end. There is usually an influence of the country and culture in design. When you design a car in some way you export the culture of the place and its people. Being Cupra and Seat, we talk about a Mediterranean country. Regarding Germans, we are different as people. Noise, expressiveness ... and you have to incorporate it into the vehicle. We do not turn to German logic, the lines are stronger, they cross, with more sensual surfaces.

Two brands are being built: Seat and Cupra. And the most important thing is to give their own identity to each of them, since they go to different clients. The first is more familiar and urban, the second is for a client with more money. Seat does not want to stagnate, while Cupra will be a bit more radical. Seat has a historical legacy that must be maintained. Cupra instead is a blank sheet. They will differentiate, without stepping on. Seat began being functional and basic, it is now more emotional and with added value: German production platform, but with Latin body. The lion is more sculpture than a golf, in this sense. But with Cupra we want to go to provocation. You may not like everyone, but those who like it, fall in love. SEAT has more mainstream vocation, with a much wider market. website-gogle-hk.oss-cn-hongkong.aliyuncs.com/drawing/article_results_6/2022/26/4312E13C3A1F52635C8A86485065516161.jpeg "Alt =" Jorge Díez, design director of SEAT: “The cars that circulate today are already Ancient ”" Title = "Jorge Díez, design director of Seat:" The cars that circulate today are already old "">

many. The distance between the posterior and previous wheels is wider, because the engine occupies less place and there are already components that in an electric car are not necessary, so that you can have more space inside the vehicle. The battery, which is at the bottom, weighs more. This forces to have broader suspensions and wider wheels. They are opportunities and innovations to combine with respect to the environment. In the end the best thing about the electric car is that we can get excited driving without feeling guilty. Only the design, but the business model. The car not only buy it and that's it: you can have applications that you will get off, as if it were a mobile. For example, if you want more acceleration, you will pay an extra. It will be a world in which the way of using technology will be changed as we know it.
