Laura Carro is 21 years old and wants to do many things. Although she is still studying the last year of Fashion Design at Mestre Mateo, she has taken time to shape Arual Ecology, a sustainable fashion project that has won the second prize for young employment at the Ría de Arousa awards given each year by the AJE and the Port of Vilagarcía; in addition to having been integrated into a program of the Diputación of electronic commerce. But Arual Ecology is much more than a plan drawn up on paper, it is the germ of a design company that hopes to have its first collection on the street within a year. And it won't be just any collection: it will be clothes made in local workshops and from recycled materials.

«I always liked nature, but it was when I studied fashion that I became interested in environmentalism. Fashion is the second most polluting economic sector. That is a fact that is very surprising, ”says the young woman. «It has become fashionable to consume low-quality clothing and low prices. That means constant transport of goods, excessive manufacturing of fabrics, relocated employment, poor working conditions... It is a tremendous rate of consumption, which ends when you throw away a lot of the clothes you buy", he reflects aloud.

The boom of sustainability

Becoming aware of this reality, which is so foreign to an important part of the population, led Laura to consider the need to bet on sustainable fashion. "In a way, it's a good time because there is a boom around sustainability, which was needed," she explains. So she has taken it very seriously to put her ideas on paper to give them the body of a company. He has had the help of his mother, "who is also an entrepreneur and who is helping me a lot with paperwork," and thanks to the award he received, he will receive training at the Galician Business School. «It is training that I need, because not everything is design. Setting up a company is complicated. It's marketing, permits...».
