1/14 Separate kitchen in living room with bookshelf
In interior decoration there is rarely a single solution to achieve an effect. This article is an example of how it is possible to separate the kitchen from the living room without doing it completely with several ideas. All of them separate the environments, mark their space and create a flow of circulation; without therefore having to renounce continuity and communication. Panels, glass enclosures, sliding doors, open shelves, fixed slatted screens...
A bookcase between the living room and the kitchen
A good idea is to place a bookcase between these spaces, either as free-standing furniture or as a customized solution. Maintain communication with a design that does without a back or that combines closed and open compartments. It can serve as a support for the living room or the kitchen, as needed. If it is a custom-made shelf, you can design it with closed compartments in the lower part, the part that is most difficult to access and that is least visible.

2/14Separate kitchen and living room with different flooring and bar between columns
Change of flooring to mark the transition
This project by Sube Interiorismo separates the kitchen from the living room with two ideas to copy. On the one hand the change of soil. By using different pavements, a division in the space of zones is created (it is what is known as "zoning"). In addition, in this study, they have taken advantage of two pillars to mark the transition. These become dividing and decorative elements, with a wooden skin. Between both columns, a bar with stools is installed.

3/14The staircase in the house between the kitchen and the living room
The staircase in the house between the kitchen and the living room
Another proposal when delimiting without completely separating the kitchen and living room is to locate each space at a side of the staircase that connects the floors in the house. If this element is designed so that it is quite open and light, you will have a limit for each environment, but visible on one side and on the other of the stairs. It is the solution that Pia Capdevila devised in this project, which is styled by Mar Gausachs.

4/14 Dining room between kitchen and living room
Dining room "in the middle"
In an open-plan space in which the social or day area is organized, that is, kitchen, living room and dining room; the latter may be the environment that separates the former with its location between them. In this way, circulation flows through the dining room, which is practical to be close to the kitchen to reduce walking when serving the table. Sube Interiorismo project with a circular table (which also favors the passage) and kitchen at the back, delimited by glass walls.

5/14Screen ready between the living room and the mini kitchen with dining room of an apartment
Fixed screen with slats
Between the living room and the mini kitchen of this apartment, a light and warm separation proposal. It is a fixed delimiting element that is designed from floor to ceiling with a wood slatted finish. It is custom made by a carpenter. It can be lacquered, made of wood or veneered in natural wood or melamine. In this case the flow of light is allowed, the view is also shared although it allows some separation. If the slats are straight, the view is greater, while if they are inclined, more privacy is achieved. Also in this project, the floor helps to define the rooms, as well as the white line that extends into the ceiling.

6/14Kitchen separated from the living room by a base unit with storage space
A double-sided unit
Between the living room and the kitchen in this house there is an L-shaped base unit that becomes a dividing and delimiting element, which separates without doing it completely, and which contains several diverse elements such as a planter, shelves or closed compartments with doors. In this way, the kitchen area is not so visible at the height of the worktop, storage space is gained, but light and visual continuity are not sacrificed by leaving the upper part clear. It is a proposal from the furniture firm Mobalpa.

With a bar or kitchen island
As we saw in the project that opens the article (an apartment designed by Gabriela Casagrande Arquitetura), a kitchen bar It is a recurring element to separate the kitchen from the living room without doing it completely. 8/14Glass partition with panels to separate the kitchen and living room
False open partition to separate
This is an example of a type of solution that separates the kitchen and living room without doing so completely. It is about replacing the conventional partition with an enclosure that combines glass, openings without doors and blind areas (generally in the lower part to take advantage of that space with furniture that supports there). The finish that Rekker Cocinas proposes in this project personalizes and turns the element into a personal hallmark of the space: blue with glass panels in the upper part up to the ceiling and blind area in the lower part, all lacquered and decorated with vertical slits.

9/14Dining room with a custom-made bench supported by a glass partition
When the glazing serves as support...
As we indicated, replacing a partition with a glass enclosure to separate the kitchen and living room is a solution that achieves the purpose without separating completely. The fact that the lower area is blind gives the possibility of attaching kitchen furniture or creating a custom-made bench with storage to create a charming dining room in the living room area, which takes advantage of the space. It is the proposal of the interior designer Natalia Zubizarreta in this project.

10/14 Glazed fixed panel between kitchen and living-dining room
A glazed fixed panel
The interior designer Pia Capdevila proposes another light and modern solution to separate the kitchen and living room without doing it completely. It is about delimiting with a fixed glass panel framed in wood (it gives warmth and more visual weight to the element) the kitchen space. In this way, the elongated effect created by arranging the kitchen furniture and the dining table below is also cut. The styling of this project is by Mar Gausachs.

11/14Kitchen with island and sliding doors to separate from the living room
Sliding French doors
This type of wooden doors with small panels is called French-style. It is The Room Studio's proposal to delimit and separate the kitchen and living room at the same time without doing it completely. The reason is that when closed they separate to prevent noise and odors generated in the kitchen from reaching the living room; but open rooms communicate. The window that the living room and kitchens are not completely separated is that the action (what happens) is shared whether there is a visit, or if you have to take a look at the children from the kitchen.

12/14Kitchen with a glass front to see the living room
Close without doing it completely with a glass splashback
Although it seems that there are not many options to separate the kitchen and living room due to the distribution on the floor, surely this idea by Natalia Zubizarreta inspires you. It is about creating a glass backsplash so that you have visibility from one room or another without losing furniture capacity in the kitchen.

13/14 Kitchen open to the living room with a glass partition in the middle
A glass partition in the middle of the room
No door, just to mark the space and increase storage capacity. Pia Capdevila has created a partition in the middle of the plan of open spaces to delimit the kitchen and separate it from the living room without doing it completely, since it does not have a door and is designed with a glazed area with a white bar. Thus it is possible to complete the U-shaped furniture in the kitchen and extend the storage furniture and the countertop into a bar; while the living area is marked. The project is styled by Mar Gausachs.

14/14Kitchen separated from the living room with maxi sliding panel
A maxi sliding panel
Open or close, define or communicate. In this case, by doing it with a large and sliding wooden blind panel, the separation is total when it is used. In this way it is like having a mobile wall to open the room completely or compartmentalize it to gain privacy when it is not necessary to share the activities that take place in each space. It is a proposal by CírculoCuadrado Design.
